Building Community: April 27th Beach Cleanup Success
In honor of Earth day, on April 27, 2024 Hele Mua partnered with Coconut and Shoreline Hotels to host a cleanup along Hawaii’s breathtaking coastline. This collaborative effort brought together hotel staff and local volunteers to tackle the growing issue of pollution on our shores. Armed with tools like a Huli Sifter and Buoyancy Separation Devices (BSD), participants worked diligently to remove microplastics and debris, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment for our community and wildlife.
What made this cleanup special was the active participation of hotel associates. Staff members experienced firsthand the beauty of Hawaii’s shores while learning about the challenges posed by microplastic pollution. Volunteers not only removed 230 pounds of trash and 310 grams of microplastics but also gained insights into the cultural and ecological importance of malama aina (caring for the land). By fostering collaboration between locals and hotel teams, we’re helping to strengthen relationships and demonstrate how hospitality can support sustainability.
The day’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Coconut and Shoreline Hotels. In addition to providing enthusiastic volunteers, the hotels generously supplied food and beverages for participants, ensuring everyone was well-fueled throughout the event. Together, we created a tangible impact, removing significant debris and inspiring collective action. As we continue to host these events, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for communities and businesses to connect, give back, and protect Hawaii’s natural beauty.
